Gas Service

Natural Gas

Vermont has one natural gas distribution company, Vermont Gas Systems, Inc. (VGS). VGS serves approximately 35,000 customers in Chittenden and Franklin Counties and continues to increase its customer base and gas sales by about 3% to 4% per year.

VGS's gas is supplied from a connection at Highgate Springs to the TransCanada Pipeline.

Liquid Propane and Fuel Oil

Liquid propane (LP) and fuel oil are not regulated by the Vermont Public Service Board. The Department of Public Service carries out the state's responsibilities with respect to gas safety, and, as such, has regulatory authority over LP, as well as natural gas safety. The Department of Public Service Engineering Division is responsible for managing Vermont's DigSafe enforcement program.

Consumer rules relating to liquid propane and fuel oil have been adopted by the Vermont Attorney General (posted on the AG's website).
