Vermont Telecommunications Plan
Map Gallery

These maps have been developed in the course of revising the Vermont Telecommunications Plan. The information in these maps will inform the policies and action plans called for in the Plan.

Broadband Series

Cable modem and DSL services are important new services for Vermont's telecommunications future. In July 2002, the DPS collected information about the then-current availability of these services.

When viewing these maps, please keep several points in mind:
These maps are intended to fairly represent the availability of these services at the sub-town level, but are not intended to provide pinpoint accuracy. If you need to confirm the availability of DSL or cable modem service at a specific location, contact a service provider.

The extent of cable systems with cable modem service is based on maps submitted to the DPS by cable companies over a number of months in 2002. The areas shown may have expanded somewhat due to line extensions occurring in the first half of 2002. However, the DPS believes that the areas served would be substantially similar to those shown.
DSL availability is not known with the same precision as cable modem service, and has been modeled based on telephone company service territory and distance from points known to originate DSL. Therefore, the DSL areas shown are labeled either "high probability" or "some possibility" of DSL service being available at the time the information is collected. While it is difficult to state that all locations inside the areas shown had access to DSL in July 2002, there is little to no likelihood that DSL service was available outside of these areas.

In some cases DSL service areas shown are limited to "consumer grade" DSL. "Consumer grade" DSL is usually available for $50/mo. or less, and usually comes with soft, instead of hard, quality-of-service guarantees (for example, promises of "typical" instead of 100% committed download or upload rates). "Consumer-grade" DSL is the DSL service most similar to the predominant cable modem service from the user's perspective. "Business grade" DSL is typically marketed to businesses or high-end users only, typically costs more, typically has higher data transfer rates, and may come with hard quality-of-service guarantees.
