Advanced Meter Infrastructure (AMI) Plans

Overview

Five of Vermont's electric distribution utilties are leveraging Smart Grid Investment Grant (SGIG) dollars, and are currently in the deployment phase of their Advanced Meter Infrastructure Plans by installing smart meters for their customers.

Central Vermont Public Service (Docket 7612)

Note: While Central Vermont Public Service (CVPS) and Green Mountain Power Company (GMP) have now been merged into a single company, the implementation of the Public Utility Commission--approved Advanced Meter Infrastructure (AMI) Plans of each utility will continue on separate tracks. In filings, the legacy GMP organization will be known as "GMP North" and CVPS will be known as "GMP South."

On April 4, 2010, using the Docket 7307 Smart Metering Memorandum of Understanding as a template, CVPS, following a collaborative effort with staff of the Department of Public Service, filed a plan setting out its strategies and schedule for the introduction of AMI into its service area. Following a technical hearing the Commission approved the plan on August 6, 2010 and CVPS immediately began implementing their SmartPower plan. CVPS plans to install 180,000 smart meters with a deployment schedule beginning Q4 2011 and ending Q4 2012.

Green Mountain Power (Docket 7704)

Note: While Central Vermont Public Service (CVPS) and Green Mountain Power Company (GMP) have now been merged into a single company, the implementation of the Public Utility Commission--approved Advanced Meter Infrastructure (AMI) plans of each utility will continue on separate tracks. In filings, the legacy GMP organization will be known as "GMP North" and CVPS will be known as "GMP South."

GMP's AMI Plan was filed on December 7, 2010 and was approved by the Commission on July 22, 2011. GMP plans to install approximately 96,200 smart meters with a deployment schedule beginning Q4 2011 and ending Q1 2013.
