Workforce Development

utility workers, utility poles, and wires

“With the tight labor market, we need every able-bodied person to be in the workforce. In each aspect of the program, the VCBB Workforce Development Team will consider how to support a more inclusive and diverse workforce. Workforce programs that build coordination of service and support delivery will proactively mitigate barriers that limit workforce participation, such as physical, financial, and childcare.” ~ Christine Hallquist, VCBB Executive Director

Pre-Apprenticeship Training Coming Soon!

This training is in development and will be offered at North Country Career Center and at other locations across the state. It will be a comprehensive training for an entry level broadband network technician. OSHA 10, flagging, and first aid and CPR will cover the safety aspects of working outside in remote areas. It will also cover communication, teamwork, and leadership skills to help advance the participants' careers. All of this is on top of essential broadband skills, which include splicing testing, repairing fiber optic cables, and the basic physics of how broadband works. Bucket truck operations and how to operate this essential tool in a safe manner is also going to be covered. The final piece of this training will be pole climbing.

New Fiber Optic Apprenticeship Program

The Fiber Optic Apprenticeship Program puts participants to work right away, allowing them to learn on the job and earn a paycheck from the start. The program is part of the Telecommunications Industry Registered Apprenticeship Program (TIRAP), a Department of Labor-registered apprenticeship program. VCBB is partnering with Wireless Infrastructure Association (WIA), TIRAP’s national sponsor, to bring the program to Vermont. It’s now officially underway with its first Vermont employer, Sertex Broadband Solutions, signing on to participate.

VCBB is looking for additional employers to register to participate in the Fiber Optic Apprenticeship Program. If you are an interested employer or someone looking for a job in broadband, email VCBB.info@Vermont.gov for more information.
